This winter, the New York Yankees have already exhausted their farm system, but there may be more moves ahead.
After a disappointing 2023 season, New York has significantly strengthened the team, however they still need a starting pitcher. The Yankees have been connected to many pitchers in addition to Marcus Stroman, a two-time All-Star.
Dylan Cease, the star player for the Chicago White Sox, has been connected to the Yankees on a few occasions thus far. It appears that the White Sox could deal Cease in a blockbuster this offseason, with New York being considered as a suitable destination.
However, if the Yankees were to finalize a trade, it would probably come at the expense of top prospect Spencer Jones, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports has reported.
“Chicago White Sox’s asking price for ace Dylan Cease remains awfully strong,” Nightengale stated. “They are asking the Baltimore Orioles for outfielders Colton Cowser or Heston Kjerstad among their prospects, and they are pursuing right-handed pitcher Chase Hampton or highly sought-after Yankees outfield prospect Spencer Jones in their package.
“Maybe one team needs to be willing to step forward and close a deal,” stated General Manager Chris Getz. There isn’t a club in existence that hasn’t shown some interest in Dylan, in my opinion.
Although Cease is a talent and could greatly strengthen the Yankees’ starting lineup, Chicago might be asking too much for him. In order to acquire superstar slugger Juan Soto this summer, New York already traded away a few of the team’s prior best prospects.
Jones is expected to enter the major leagues in 2025 after shown some flashes in the minor levels. If the Yankees wanted to, they could close a deal, but it would probably cost them Jones and other prospects.
