By now in the NFL season, you could pardon any football fan residing in New York or New Jersey for being a little suspicious.
The guy that the New York Jets built their team around has threatened to return from a major injury too soon out of spite, so the team has spent the 2023 season fielding an offensive attack.
In contrast, the New York Giants have regressed from their 2022 season of success. The most concerning aspect of their situation is that they have a serious question mark at quarterback following the season-ending injury that Daniel Jones sustained despite receiving a $160 million contract in the offseason.
MetLife Stadium was in disarray. Dead as overdone macaroni. As tasteless as tomato sauce from a jar.
Let’s introduce Tommy Cutlets.
With his play and his style, Tommy DeVito, the hometown hero from Cedar Grove, New Jersey, has given NY/NJ football a boost. Overnight, he became a sensation, transforming the Giants’ fortunes and inspiring pride in nonnas everywhere.
Thus, no offense to Matt Barkley or Tyrod Taylor. However, DeVito’s show has to go on from here. Not persuaded? Let me explain why you are mistaken.
He is triumphant.
For now, set aside your admiration for the DeVito show; we’ll talk about it later. Keep in mind that the NFL is a results-driven organization. Additionally, under DeVito, the outcomes are better than they have been the entire season.
Under center, the Giants have a 3-1 record with DeVito. In his four starts, he has led the team to more victories than in the nine games in which Jones or Taylor started.
Big Blue has won three straight games, and DeVito has thrown five touchdowns and no interceptions in that time. During those three games, he had a passer rating of 119.8, and in Week 14, he ranked sixth in the league in terms of EPA per dropback.
Although they had their chance, other quarterbacks were not as successful in carrying out Brian Daboll’s offense. DeVito’s performances have earned him the right to remain in the position.
2024 and Later
Daniel Jones suffered injuries to his neck and ACL in back-to-back seasons. a possible first-round selection in a draft full of quarterback prospects. The Giants will need to consider a number of options before deciding on their course of action at the most significant position in football in 2024.
It’s safe to assume that the Giants do not intend to include Barkley and Taylor. However, what if DeVito proves to be a reliable backup for the upcoming season—or beyond—? If you’re Joe Schoen, that’s an invaluable asset to have come into your possession. There is no such reward when a veteran plays who is not part of the team’s medium- or long-term plans.
Allow DeVito to gain experience on the job, and then evaluate his prospects in the NFL based on that sample.
TD Must See
Alright, the Giants will not be going to the postseason. That is the result of starting the season 2–8 and being placed in a division with two of the top teams in the NFL.
But ever since DeVito established himself on the squad, the Giants have been extremely interesting. If this were not such a cliche, you could reasonably argue that it is far too true:
a local resident who attended Don Bosco Prep nearby.
The “TD” network.
The moniker. (Once more, people. Cutlets, Tommy.)
The gesture of the hands. (“I don’t believe a word for it exists.”)
It’s a fairytale from North Jersey. Show us another athlete who, like DeVito, spends three hours stocking an Italian deli in order to sign autographs.
Italian mothers in the state have become ardent supporters of the New York Giants football team. Treasure that Brian Daboll, and above all, don’t tamper with a winning formula. One great quarterback was benched by the Giants far too soon. Keep history from happening again.
His Representative
That’s DeVito’s agent, Sean Stellato. Is it really your intention to inform him that his client has been benched?
I wish you luck on that. Tell us how it works out for you.
