In 2019, Bryce Harper inked the biggest free agent deal in Major League Baseball history. Giancarlo Stanton signed a $325 million contract, but Harper signed a 13-year $330 million deal, $5 million more.
If nothing else, this contract keeps Bryce with the Philadelphia Phillies for the next eight seasons, or until he turns 38. Harper is hoping to sign an extension with the team, according to agent Scott Boras, who stated as much on Wednesday.
Regarding Boras’s remarks, ESPN reported what follows.
“Bryce has certainly expressed to them that he wants to end his career in Philadelphia,” Boras stated. “I think Bryce is a franchise player, and I’ve told [president of baseball operations] Dave [Dombrowski] as much. It was for the fans that he came. In addition to my advice, he says, “I just want to go make sure I can recruit players in Philadelphia, let the fans know that I’m committed to staying there for the duration.” He has, in my opinion, been a crucial voice in helping them draw in big free agents.”
Now that Harper is playing first base, there’s a possibility that he will play into his 40s. Additionally, in 2023, the 31-year-old displayed no signs of slowing down. He hit 21 home runs and had a slash line of.293/.401/.499 in baseball. Only 126 games were played by him after his Tommy John recovery.
Harper has led Philadelphia to the World Series and won an MVP award. Still, according to Boras, he has more objectives to meet.
“He wants to accomplish a lot of things in Philadelphia… I believe he has altered the perception of Philadelphia among players, and as a result, he has entered and stated, “I want this off my mind.” I intend to play far longer than my current contract allows.”
The Phillies and Bryce are a match made in heaven. Maybe a new contract that keeps him until his 40s will be the icing on the cake.
