The 2024 NBA Draft is approaching, and the Houston Rockets have a significant decision with their No. 3 overall pick, which they obtained through the draft lottery. Finishing the season with a 41-41 record, the Rockets were in the playoff mix for much of the year. Given their goal to become playoff contenders and the young talent already on their roster, the Rockets might consider trading the No. 3 pick for a more experienced player, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic.
At last week’s combine, several teams showed interest in trading for the Rockets’ No. 3 pick. However, it’s not certain that the Rockets will trade it. General manager Rafael Stone mentioned that they would keep the pick if it made sense for the team.
“I don’t think there’s only one way to develop young players and I don’t think there’s only one way to build a roster. We definitely would draft someone and bring him into the fold if it made sense,” Stone said. “Because we like our current roster so much, it provides us with more flexibility to explore creative deals of all sorts.”
The Rockets might face a scenario similar to last year when they considered trading out of the first round but decided to keep their pick when Cam Whitmore became available at No. 20. If a player they like is available at No. 3, they are likely to retain the pick.
