The NFL offseason is starting once again, and rumors regarding Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs’ future are still rampant. The four-time Pro Bowler reignited trade rumors this past weekend when he once again posted a string of cryptic messages on X, the social media site that was formerly known as Twitter.
It’s hard to say what Diggs’ most recent posts will lead to, but it would make sense if Buffalo traded him this offseason. To get out of their terrible salary cap situation, the Bills have restructured their contracts and made a number of cuts. Furthermore, Diggs’ output collapsed in the second half of 2023; in his final seven regular season games, he averaged a meager 45 receiving yards and only one score.
Buffalo would incur $8.8 million in dead money and preserve slightly over $19 million in salary space for 2024 if Diggs were to be traded after June 1. These three teams might be a good fit for the 30-year-old if the Bills decide to let him go.
Cardinals of Arizona
Arizona can use either of its first-round picks to select a talented wideout in the draft the following month, but acquiring Diggs would free up the team to use their fourth-round pick creatively. Depending on whatever QB prospect the Cardinals choose, they could finish up with a huge haul for the selection.
Having the most 2024 selections of any club (11), Arizona doesn’t necessary need more draft cash, but moving the No. 4 overall pick might hasten its reconstruction. The sooner the Cardinals can return to postseason contention as a team with a quarterback who earns the fifth-highest annual compensation at the position, the better.
Arizona still boasts the ninth-most cap space in the NFL ($29.96M) despite Murray’s contract. The fact that WR Marquise Brown signed with Kansas City last week makes it even more reason to consider a Diggs deal. Buffalo might be interested in a trade involving one of the Cardinals’ three third-round picks.
The Houston Texans
The goal of Texans general manager Nick Caserio is to get as much out of rookie-scale quarterback C.J. Stroud as possible. Due in large part to Caserio’s aggression, Houston has emerged as one of the offseason’s greatest winners thus far. It appears that Caserio would like to bolster his already strong receiving group with further quality.
Before being moved to Chicago, newly acquired Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen told reporters this past Saturday that the Texans had trade talks with the Chargers for his services. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 claims that Houston made Allen an offer that included a pick swap and a 2025 third-round draft choice. The organization would have then tried to sign Allen to a contract extension.
The Texans pursuing a Diggs deal wouldn’t be shocking if they were willing to pay for Allen with draft picks and an extension. Although Houston has improved its defense significantly, the addition of a playmaker such as Diggs to the offense might be the missing component that makes Houston a dark horse to win the Super Bowl in 2024.
The Giants of New York
It’s uncertain if New York would be prepared to forfeit additional selection money after sacrificing some in order to pull off a sensational trade for edge rusher Brian Burns. The Giants, on the other hand, might be the only team that can best utilize Diggs’ advantages given that HC Brian Daboll was as his offensive coordinator for two seasons in Buffalo (2020–21).
Diggs became the first player in Bills history to lead the NFL in receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,535) in 2020, his most productive season as a professional. During his tenure in Daboll’s scheme, Diggs finished fourth in receiving yards (2,760) and third among wideouts in receptions (230).
Diggs most likely wouldn’t produce at the same elite level with the Giants as he did in Buffalo because of New York’s poor quarterback situation. Still, Diggs might be the ideal target to help a rookie’s growth if New York is able to choose a signal-caller with its sixth overall choice.
