It is now reasonable to conclude that the Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Tigers made a transaction on January 7, 2023, after more than a year of data collection. The Phillies acquired Gregory Soto and Kody Clemens in this transaction. Donny Sands, Nick Maton, and Matt Vierling were acquired by the Tigers. At the time, the Phillies needed to strengthen their bullpen. In order to acquire Soto, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski struck a deal with his previous organization. There doesn’t seem to be many five-player trades that split two to three. This is particularly true in the absence of significant contracts. In addition, each of the five players involved in the transaction had participated in at least two major league games prior.
Vierling is the only one of the three players the Tigers recruited who is still with the squad. In 42 games this season, he has a.261/.286/.410 line, three home runs, and sixteen RBI. Maton is a player with the Baltimore Orioles’ Triple-A Norfolk team right now. Maton had eight home runs, 32 RBI, and a.173/.288/.305 line in 93 games for the Tigers the previous season. Sands, meanwhile, is a player for the San Francisco Giants’ Triple-A Sacramento team. Interestingly, he never played for the Tigers in the major leagues. The Phillies have now unquestionably prevailed over the Tigers in their 2023 trade.

Gregory Soto.
Soto has been one of the Phillies’ finest relief pitchers ever since joining the team. Soto has a 4-5 record, a 4.54 ERA, a 1.278 WHIP, and 80 strikeouts in 87 games for the Phillies. In addition, he has five saves, a 3.50 FIP, and an 89 ERA+ during his stint. Even though those stats might not look impressive at first glance, it’s important to remember that Soto has gone scoreless in 67 of his 87 Phillies games. In addition, Soto’s H/9, HR/9, BB/9, and K/9 percentages with the Phillies are superior to his 186 Tigers appearances total. It is noteworthy that Soto started seven games for the Tigers.
In 18 games played thus far this season, Soto has a 1-1 record, a 5.79 ERA, a 1.857 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts. This season, he also has a 3.14 FIP and a 71 ERA+. With a 5.8 BB9 and a 9.6 K9 rate, Soto’s walk and strikeout rates are inconsistent, and opponents’ average against him is.309. But so far this season, he has made both of his save attempts. Soto had a 3-4 record, a 4.62 ERA, a 1.144 WHIP, and 65 strikeouts in 69 games during the 2023 season. Apart from that, he posted a 3.59 FIP, a 94 ERA+, and a career-best 3.3 BB9 rate (2012). In six tries, Soto recorded three saves.
Kody Clemens
Clemens has stepped up in recent games as Trea Turner is sidelined due to injury. Clemens has three home runs, ten RBI, and a.321/.345/.821 line through 11 games this season. When the Phillies were down to their final out on Saturday against the Washington Nationals, one of those home homers was hit. With his home drive, Clemens knotted the game and gave the Phillies a 48.9% chance to win.In extra innings, the Phillies would go on to win the game. On Sunday, Clemens had another big hit in the Nationals game. With his two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Phillies’ chances of winning increased by 24.5%.
Even after Turner recovers, there is undoubtedly a case to be made for Clemens to stay with the Phillies. But that seems doubtful given their personnel situation right now. Cristian Pache needs to be assigned because he is at a loss for possibilities. In the meanwhile, Whit Merrifield will not be released by the Phillies thus soon after being signed in the summer.This prepares Clemens for Triple-A Lehigh Valley as Clemens’ option when Turner is activated off the injured list. Despite his strong performances in his major league stints this season, Clemens probably won’t have enough room to remain on the 26-man roster when Turner returns.
