Tanner Conner will be raised for the third time this season when he plays against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, according to a statement from the Miami Dolphins. The former Idaho State tight end played 34 total snaps while in action against the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers.
narrow end Due to an ankle ailment, Durham Smythe was limited during practice all week, but he was not listed as injured for the Commanders game on Sunday. When Conner was healthy for Weeks 6 and 7, Tyler Kroft was not in action.
Miami targets tight ends just 7.9% of the time in the league, and since Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills, Smythe hasn’t ended with more than 28 receiving yards. About 70% of the time, the Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa target wide receivers, particularly Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
Last week, the receivers for the Dallas Cowboys tore through the Washington defense for 245 yards and three scores; yet, the Commanders haven’t let a tight end cross the end zone since Week 9.
Conner was a wide receiver who was selected to the first team of the Big Sky in the spring of 2021, and he was an undrafted college free agency. When he joined with the Dolphins prior to the 2022 season, he switched to tight end. Miami’s coach Mike McDaniel may be looking for pass-catching playmakers at other spots because his team depends heavily on their wide receivers most of the time.
