The Mets appoint Mike Sarbaugh to coach third base and John Gibbons to coach the bench.

 

According to reports from The Athletic and Andy Martino, the Mets plan to appoint Mike Sarbaugh as their third-base coach and John Gibbons, a former Blue Jays manager, as their new bench coach.

Gibbons managed Toronto twice, from 2013 to 2018. The first time he did so was from 2004 to 2008. The Blue Jays emerged victorious in the American League East in 2015 and secured a spot in the American League Wild Card in 2016 during this latter stretch.

Toronto was eliminated in the ALCS in both of those seasons, but the 2015 campaign marked the team’s first postseason appearance since its 1993 World Series championship. As the manager of the Blue Jays, Gibbons had a 793-789 record overall.

Sarbaugh worked as the Cleveland Indians’ third base coach for the last nine of his thirty-three years with the team, having spent eleven of those years on the coaching staff.
