It was more than just getting his work done during Kevin Gausman’s positive performance in Monday afternoon’s Spring Training finale against the Toronto Blue Jays. It was a crucial indication that Gausman is headed back to his Cy Young level of performance.
His preparedness for the regular season had been questioned due to a shoulder ailment that surfaced earlier in camp, but the 33-year-old righty looked impressive as he struck out seven Pirates players in three innings.
It is impossible to overstate how significant Gausman’s successful return to form was. Toronto will surely depend on him, Yusei Kikuchi, Chris Bassitt, and Jose Berrios to perform at a high level if they are to succeed after being third in the AL Cy Young voting the previous season. In order for the Blue Jays to go far this season, both the team and the fans need their ace to be healthy and productive. Considering Monday’s performance, those anticipations could be warranted.
