In his NBA career, Jayson Tatum has not yet experienced championship success. There have been some pundits who are not happy about the lack of a championship. Some believed that Tatum’s Celtics’ stellar roster—rather than just Tatum’s play—was the reason they had the best record in the NBA. Chris “Mad Dog” Russo of ESPN’s First Take tried to compare Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics to other well-known NBA players. In response, JJ Redick and Stephen A. Smith responded to Russo’s criticism.
With the Boston Celtics holding the top spot in the Eastern Conference and Jayson Tatum having had an amazing season, Chris Russo didn’t give Tatum much credit. Here’s what Russo had to say about ranking Tatum:
Tatum wasn’t, in Russo’s opinion, one of the league’s best five players. He thought that Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns, LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets were all better than Tatum. Russo said that, and Stephen A. Smith sat silently.
Russo thought Tatum did not lead the Celtics to their best game. He pointed out that Tatum hadn’t performed well for the Celtics when it mattered most, with the exception of his performance in Game 6 against the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2022 NBA playoffs and Game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers in 2023.
