One of the NBA’s least surprising rumors ahead of the offseason is that the Philadelphia 76ers plan to pursue a star player. After trading James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers, the 76ers enhanced their assets for a potential star acquisition and will also have cap space for a big-name free agent.
Paul George has been a notable candidate for the Sixers, but they are also keeping tabs on LeBron James’ situation with the Los Angeles Lakers. According to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the 76ers would love to team up James with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
“They would love to add LeBron James to their All-Star tandem of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey,” Pompey wrote. “The Sixers believe Embiid and Maxey will position them as the second-best team in the Eastern Conference, just behind the Boston Celtics.”
For this to happen, James would need to opt out of his $51.4 million deal with the Lakers before free agency. Although it’s likely he will stay with the Lakers, if James does become a free agent, teams will try to entice him with new opportunities.
While only James knows his plans, it’s hard to imagine the Sixers not being a major contender if he explores free agency.
