Despite suffering a setback from a leg injury during his debut season with the Raiders, McDaniel’s perseverance was evident. In his comeback season, he made three interceptions, made one sack, and earned a starting spot. In 1992, he was selected for the first of five consecutive Pro Bowls, further demonstrating his brilliance and tenacity.
His career’s high point occurred in 1994 when he picked off Drew Bledsoe three times and returned two interceptions for touchdowns against the New England Patriots.
The Panthers waived Throckmorton last year, doing so after he had made seven starts for a team that lost guard starter Brady Christensen in Week 1 and had Austin Corbett out of the mix until late October. Also sustaining a number of injuries up front, the Titans claimed Throckmorton and used him as a backup in six games. The Titans made Throckmorton an offer, per Klis, but he will instead opt to rejoin Payton (and former O-line coach Zach Strief) in Denver.
Throckmorton, 27, made 14 starts for the Saints in Payton’s final New Orleans season (2021). He has worked almost exclusively at guard in the pros. During the 2021 slate in New Orleans, the 2020 UDFA logged 626 snaps at left guard and 282 at right guard. The Saints lost Andrus Peat to a torn pec midway through that season, and they played five games without center Erik McCoy as well. Throckmorton added six starts in 2022.
Throckmorton has not been considered a quality guard by Pro Football Focus, who has ranked him close to the bottom among regulars for his entire career. But it’s clear that the Oregon product brings experience with Payton and Strief. Last season, Quinn Meinerz and Ben Powers, the starting guards, were healthy throughout for the Broncos. Though Throckmorton will be added to the mix to work as an interior swingman, both are still bound by contracts. According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Peart is expected to start as the team’s swing tackle. His one-year contract is worth $1.3 million, with $368 thousand guaranteed.
One of the 2023 backups, 2023 seventh-rounder Alex Forsyth or 2022 fifth-rounder Luke Wattenberg, might enter the lineup as a result of the team losing center Lloyd Cushenberry (to the Titans) in free agency, while the organization may also choose to make a higher-level investment at the position. A backup slot inside the lineup would become available if one of the holdovers entered the game. Throckmorton’s experience with the Broncos’ offensive system and his 27 career starts should help him stand a chance of making Denver’s 53-man roster.
