The Philadelphia Eagles have veered from their usual playbook, surprising many with their latest roster move. General manager Howie Roseman has defied expectations by securing the services of Saquon Barkley.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles reached a deal with the former Giants running back, agreeing to a three-year contract worth $37.75 million, with $26 million guaranteed. With incentives, Barkley could potentially earn up to $46.75 million.
This unexpected move marks a departure from Philadelphia’s recent history, as they haven’t invested heavily in a marquee running back since trading LeSean McCoy in 2015. Roseman’s preference for committee backfields has been a trademark, but Barkley’s substantial contract suggests he may shoulder a significant workload in the upcoming season.
Despite the Eagles’ running back committee in 2023, which included Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott, and D’Andre Swift, the team’s rushing offense ranked 23rd in the NFL, averaging 103.4 yards per game. This statistic is particularly surprising given that Swift finished as the league’s fifth-leading rusher with 1,049 yards.
