The Boston Bruins may eventually decide to ignore the Detroit Red Wings, but that time did not come on Black Friday 2023.The tryptophan hangover was evident as the home club embarrassed a sold-out crowd at TD Garden by giving up a season-high two powerplay goals in a lopsided 5-2 loss to the Red Wings, who now hold the record for the Bruins’ only two regulation losses this year.
Boston Hockey Now’s Bruins postgame is here:
BANGER: With three hits and four shots at the end of the game on Friday, Charlie Coyle was one of the few Bruins who appeared to be full of enthusiasm.
DOGHOUSE: Throughout the first period and much of the game, the Detroit Red Wings kept the Boston Bruins confined to their own zone. The Red Wings had six powerplays and a season-high 11 turnovers as a result of the Bruins’ inability to clear the zone. Bruins rookie center Matt Poitras concluded with two giveaways, one of which resulted in an Alex DeBrincat goal at 15:01 of the first period, despite the fact that he played a stronger game than he has recently.
Errors from a youthful rookie like Poitras, 19, are to be expected, but not from a seasoned player and captain like Brad Marchand, 35, who committed three mistakes. Even worse was when, trailing 4-2 and looking for a spark, Brad Marchand took an unneeded, conceited, and foolish cross-checking penalty at 8:19 of the third quarter.
Not just Marchand was subjected to unruly punishments. At 4:12 of the last session, Brandon Carlo took a hooking penalty, which came only one minute after Danton Heinen had narrowed the Red Wings’ advantage to 3-2. At 5:08, Dylan Larkin scored on a powerplay as a result. 2:18 later, Carlo was given a cross-checking penalty as well, but the Bruins ended it.
Unsung Hero: The power play by the Red Wings. The Red Wings scored two powerplay goals as a result of the Bruins spending a lot of time in the penalty box, as was previously reported. The Wings went 2-for-6 in the game’s last minute, and while they undoubtedly desired to score more while having the man advantage, their powerplay undoubtedly wore down the Bruins.
IMPORTANT DATA: This season, the Boston Bruins have suffered two regulation losses, both to the Red Wings. The Red Wings have improved each of the last two offseasons, but for some reason the Bruins still underestimate them. They are now 1-2-0 against their Original 6 opponents this season and, even though they have always been ahead of them in the standings, are 5-5-0 against Detroit in the previous three seasons.
