Since free agency began, the New York Giants have been among the most active teams, letting big names walk and completely revamping the roster. While general manager Joe Schoen was not thrilled about some of the departures, the additions—particularly at the positions they were made at—make a lot of sense given where New York is.
Following two disappointing seasons in which Daniel Jones was sidelined and suffered two major injuries, the Giants had a rough 2023 season, finishing with a 6-11 record and regressing from their 2022 postseason run. Joe Schoen made some tough decisions, allowing Xavier McKinney to sign with the Green Bay Packers and Saquon Barkley to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, who are in the same division.
Upon examining the Giants’ free agency moves, it is evident that Joe Schoen prioritized positions of value. This makes sense considering that he elected to reinvest those funds into the offensive line and edge room while letting safety McKinney and running back Barkley walk.
Having said that, let’s evaluate the Giants’ free agent decisions.
Giants sign guard Jon Runyan to a $30 million, three-year contract.
Although Jon Runyan is not a particularly good guard, he was an essential one. It is commonly known that the Giants struggle with their offensive line. Averaging play would be a significant improvement even if they do not acquire superstars at every position.
Even though Jon Runyan’s $10 million contract isn’t the most thrilling, it makes sense after guys like Robert Hunt and Michael Onwenu received almost $20 million annually. Still, there is a ton of work that needs to be done to improve the offensive line.
