Potential starting lineups and pitchers for the Atlanta Braves against the San Diego PadresPotential starting lineups and pitchers for the Atlanta Braves against the San Diego Padres

Atlanta lost the first game of the series against San Diego despite a strong effort from their pitchers last night. The Braves offence put up a poor performance, striking out eighteen times in the evening. This morning, it was revealed that RHP Pierce Johnson, who had been on the disabled list, would be returning to the bullpen. If Elder has any issues with the Padres lineup, they might turn to their fairly rested bullpen early on.

Probable starting pitchers for Braves vs. Padres

Bryce Elder (1-1, 4.79 ERA) has had his share of ups and downs in his young career, and his 2024 season is following that script. His latest start against the Mets was a fair performance, as he pitched into the sixth inning. The best trend for Elder is that he made it through his start without allowing a walk, a key indication to how well he performs.

Yu Darvish (3-1, 2.43 ERA) has shown no signs of slowing down in his age 37 season. Darvish signed an extension in February of 2023 that takes him through the 2028 season, and the early returns for the Padres have been tremendous. He likely has the biggest kitchen sink of all starting pitchers, as he throws eight different pitches with at least 5% frequency.
