It’s undoubtedly a wise choice for the present team and for recruiting stability. Venables is here to stay, thanks to the program’s unwavering dedication. However, there is substantial disagreement as to whether the early extension was necessary.
A major pay increase for Venables is part of the new six-year contract, and as OU prepares for the SEC, there has been an increase in program commitment overall. Venables has two seasons total of 16-10, including a 10-3 campaign the previous year.” The trajectory of the Oklahoma football program is one that has many positive aspects. The recruiting class of the program is among the best in recent memory, with some even arguing that Venables is a more adept recruiter than former head coach Bob Stoops.
Venables’ top accomplishments on the field are a 10-2 regular season in 2023 headlined by a win over the No. 3 Texas Longhorns. Still, the coach’s contract extension is based more in what Venables can accomplish than anything he’s already done. Despite defeating Texas, Oklahoma missed the Big 12 title game after losing to the Kansas Jayhawks and Oklahoma State Cowboys. Some probably would have liked to see Venables reach a conference title before getting an extension.
