Paul Gallen has scolded the NRL officials over a “disgraceful” missed call during Penrith’s win over the Tigers, which saw Brad Schneider avoid being sin-binned for a deliberate professional foul on Justin Olam.
During a crucial moment of the reigning premiers’ 22-6 victory in Bathurst, the playmaker ankle-tapped Olam without the ball, preventing him the chance to score a try for the Tigers and finish off a break from Junior Tupou.
Despite the clear nature of the incident, Schneider wasn’t sat down for 10 minutes and allowed to stay on the field for the Panthers.
Speaking on Monday night’ maininfo.magazine interview, the former rugby league tough guy lost it over Schneider’s lack of more punishment.
“That was completely absurd,” remarked Gallen.
“I believe they score from that play; that was a try that went begging. He dived to tap him on the ankle. How isn’t that someone in the sin bin?
“I don’t know how the Bunker missed such a shameful call. Both the touch judge and the referee ought to have noticed it. That call was shameful.
Phil Gould agreed with Gallen, saying it ought to have been a sin bin.
He said, “What was that?”
“We learn every single thing in an absurdly technical game. They use a microscope to look everywhere, yet sometimes things are overlooked.
“It was a big moment.”
After the game, Tigers coach Benji Marshall criticized the decision in his news conference; the team lost and fell to 13th place.
