David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists, and Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand scored the overtime winner with 7.2 seconds left as the Bruins beat the Maple Leafs 4-3.
The Bruins bent but didn’t break twice in this one. First, they blew a 2-0 lead when Max Domi scored 2:11 into the third period, and then they blew a 3-2 lead when Auston Matthews scored with 5.7 seconds left in regulation. However, it was the Bruins who had the momentum in the extra frame as they outshot the Leafs 11-5 and won the game on Marchand’s eighth goal of the season.
The Bruins also had goals from Trent Frederic and Kevin Shattenkirk, while Linus Ullmark made 37 stops.
Max Domi and Matthews both scored goals for the Leafs. 33 saves were made by Joseph Woll.
Boston Hockey Now’s Bruins postgame is here:
Winger David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins recorded his 12th multi-point game of the year, extending his Hart Trophy-worthy season. Pastrnak finished with ten shots on goal, two assists, and a goal. As previously said, Pastrnak scored the first goal for the Bruins, blowing past Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll with a laser after taking a feed from Brandon Carlo and blowing into the attacking zone.
Subsequently, Pastrnak assisted in making it 2-1 for the Bruins by finding Kevin Shattenkirk cutting to the short side of the net and feeding a seed to the advancing defenseman. After being stuffed on a breakaway, he subsequently provided assistance on Marchand’s winning shot in overtime.
BANGER: Given his 6-foot-5, 217-pound physique, a significant segment of the Boston Bruins fan base criticizes Brandon Carlo for not being physically strong enough. Well, take this puck scribe as disagreeing, since I think Carlo is one of the NHL’s better lockdown defensemen. In addition to recording four hits and a blocked shot on Saturday night, he also contributed offensively, setting up David Pastrnak’s goal 10:44 into the opening frame.
DOGHOUSE: Following this game, there will be a player and a team in the doghouse. In the last seconds of a game, the Boston Bruins are trying to hold onto a lead, thus they have pulled the opposing team’s goalkeeper. The Boston Bruins gave up a goal as their opponent withdrew their goalie to make room for an extra attacker for the fourth time this season. With 5.7 ticks remaining in regulation, Auston Matthews tied the game at three by taking advantage of the confusion in front of the Bruins’ net, just like he had earlier in the game.
16:03 into the first period, I tweeted that Reaves had truly turned into a disgrace and the bully who no one is scared of anymore, in response to his stupid hit on Boston Bruins rookie center Matt Poitras. Reaves finished this hit with the refs staring straight at him because there was just no need for him to. Reaves gave the Bruins a powerplay that, fortunately for him and the Maple Leafs, the Bruins were unable to convert because no one on the team was going to bite at his foolishness.
UNSUNG HERO: After conceding nine goals on sixty shots and losing two straight, Linus Ullmark was back to his Vezina form. Ullmark was instrumental in the Bruins’ comeback attempt in overtime, making five stops to give the team a chance to win. With 37 saves at the end of the game, he was not exclusively responsible for any of the three goals scored by the Maple Leafs. The Bruins probably wouldn’t have scored a point in this game if it weren’t for him because there was always pandemonium in front of him.
