Story lost his roster place when David Hamilton was recalled by Boston on Saturday from Triple-A Worcester. He’ll be reexamined on Monday in Boston.

After diving to stop Mike Trout’s powerful ground ball, the 31-year-old infielder departed the field in the fourth inning of Boston’s 8-6 victory over Los Angeles, the home team.

Story dove to his right to keep Trout’s bouncer in the infield, but he landed hard on his left shoulder and was in obvious pain. He remained on the outfield grass before walking off the field with Red Sox manager Alex Cora.

Veteran infielder Pablo Reyes took over for Story with the Red Sox leading 4-0 and started at short on Saturday night against the Angels.

Story, who is in his third season with Boston, is batting .226 with no homers and four RBIs in eight games. He went 0-for-2 before leaving the game.

Story missed the first four months of last season after undergoing right elbow surgery in January 2023. He also missed extended time in 2022, his first season with the Red Sox, with a hairline fracture in his wrist.

Story, a two-time Silver Slugger winner (in 2018 and 2019), began his major league career with the Colorado Rockies, where he became one of the league’s greatest shortstop hitters. During 745 games with the Rockies, he batted.272 with 158 home runs and 450 RBIs.

In March 2022, Story consented to a $140 million, six-year contract with the Red Sox. However, since signing that contract, he has only appeared in 145 games and is hitting.227 with 84 RBIs and 19 home runs.

The 26-year-old Hamilton played in 15 Red Sox games the previous year, batting.121 with six walks.
