Turuva raises her hand to choose the Blues
The Panthers teammates have asked new Blues coach Michael Maguire to consider Fiji Bati star Sunia Turuva for the next State of Origin series. Turuva has put up his hand for selection to NSW. Along with Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh, Turuva, 21, is the NRL’s top try scorer thus far this season. He is competing for a spot in the NSW team after scoring nine tries in eight Penrith games as a left wing.
Turuva, the 2022 NRL rookie of the year, was born and reared in Sydney. He has played six Test matches for Fiji, but his junior rugby league career started with Berala Bears before he advanced via the Panthers pathways system.
Every NRL player’s childhood dream is to play Origin and represent their home state, according to Turuva. “I am eligible because I was born here, and representing NSW has always been a dream of mine.” Playing for Fiji is a distinct experience. I’m saving that for my family. It would be an entirely different ball game to represent NSW. “State of Origin is highly supported by the public, and the entire Australian population is captivated by the game.”
Penrith teammate With Josh Addo-Carr, Zac Lomax, and Joseph Aukuso Suaali’i expected to compete for the other wing place, Brian To’o is nearly a lock to be one of the Blues’ players. But teammates for the Panthers think Maguire ought to think about Turuva, who has shown himself to be reliable under the high ball and averages 146.1 running meters per contest this year.
