Legendary Steelers player Hines Ward is confirmed deceased at 48 after a tragic accident.
Hines Ward, a former wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, may return to coaching soon after leaving his position as San Antonio Brahmas head coach.
Following the XFL’s merger with the USFL and subsequent contraction to create the eight-team UFL for the 2024 season, Ward was forced out of the league. Wade Phillips, the former head coach of the league-contracted Houston Roughnecks, is taking over in San Antonio.
As a result, Ward an unrestricted free agent, and some people began to speculate that he may rejoin the Pittsburgh Steelers to coach wide receivers. Prior to joining FAU and eventually the XFL, Ward worked as an offensive assistant with the New York Jets for two years while serving as a coaching intern with the Steelers in 2017.
However, it appears like he might be returning to the collegiate ranks rather than moving back to Pittsburgh. Ward is a candidate for Texas Southern’s head coaching position, according to a report from Texas Football.
Southwestern Athletic Conference is an all-HBCU conference, and Texas Southern is an HBCU with its home campus in Houston, Texas. Dion Sanders coached at Jackson State in the same conference before relocating to Colorado. In the SWAC, former NFL linebacker Eddie Robinson coaches at Alabama State, while former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson teaches at Grambling State.
After leading the Tigers to a 3-8 record in 2023, the head coach’s fifth season, TSU decided not to extend his contract.
Ward would suit the conference’s profile as a place that is drawing young former players to become head coaches, though it is unclear who else Texas Southern is considering.
