Three Free Agents The Toronto Maple Leafs Should Steer Clear of
I evaluated Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving’s first-year performance last month. I gave him a C for the Free Agency grade. This is mostly due to the fact that his two largest acquisitions in terms of caphit were underwhelming and that some of the smaller AAV deals he made did not turn out to be very successful. If Treliving wants the Toronto Maple Leafs to advance past the first round once more this season, they will need to notably improve in this area.
Fortunately, he will have an additional $18.5 million to spend this off-season on player re-signs and, ideally, improving the squad (Capfriendly,com). Treliving will hopefully do much better when given another chance. The signings of Ryan Reaves, John Klingberg, and David Kampf by the Leafs last season was a huge financial waste. There are a number of concerning names that are circulating that the Leafs might be interested in.
So I made a list of the three guys I think the Leafs should pass on in free agency. Maybe this time, Treliving will learn from his mistakes and do a better job. I’m not too optimistic about his Calgary performance, but there’s always hope. Contract forecasts from AFPAnalytics will be used in this post.
