The right-hander Daulton Jefferies declared on Friday morning that he and the Giants had reached an agreement on a contract. With an invitation to spring training, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle confirms that it’s a minor league agreement. Furthermore, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Yoshi Tsutsugo, the first baseman, has reached an agreement with San Francisco. Presumably, that’s a minor league contract with a non-roster invite as well.
For Jefferies, the Bay Area is home. A product of Berkeley, he was chosen with the 37th pick in the 2016 draft by the A’s. In 2020, Jefferies made his major league debut in just one game. He made five appearances in the ensuing season and eight in 2022 as a pitcher. Over his 14 career appearances (10 starts), he has pitched 56 1/3 innings at a 5.75 ERA. He walks less than 6% of opponents while striking out at a mediocre 15.2% rate.
Due to injury, the 28-year-old has missed the majority of the last two seasons. In June 2022, he had thoracic outlet surgery. Later that September, he needed a Tommy John procedure. Last offseason, Oakland ran him through waivers and off the 40-man roster. At the conclusion of the previous season, Jefferies chose to sign a minor league free agent contract. He will be able to observe former Oakland captain Bob Melvin in camp. Even if Jefferies secures a spot on the 40-man roster, the Giants could still freely send him to Triple-A because he still has an option left.
Tsutsugo, who turned thirty-two this past year, was a resident of the San Francisco system. After leaving independent ball in August, he signed a contract with the Giants and participated in 17 Double-A and Triple-A games. Tsutsugo had a.249/.380/.432 line with Texas’ top minor league affiliate in the first half of the previous season. Tsutsugo hit.197/.291/.339 over 640 big league plate appearances from 2020 to 22.
