The Boston Red Sox are in a weird spot. Boston made some positive strides in 2023 but still has a lot of work to do. The Red Sox have been linked to multiple stars this offseason, but there have been rumors that the club won’t actually be spending big this offseason.
The Red Sox mainly have been linked to star pitchers like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery, but at this point, there’s really no way to know what the club’s plans are.
ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel attempted to chart out a path forward for the club but is as confused as the rest of us about what the team’s priorities are. Although this is the case, he did make one intriguing suggestion and linked former New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres catcher Gary Sánchez to Boston.
“Boston has about $50 million to spend to stay under the threshold with a little space for a trade deadline addition,” McDaniel said. “A right-handed-hitting infielder to pair with Enmanuel Valdez, a catcher to play ahead of Connor Wong/Reese McGuire and a starting pitcher are the three spots ripe for upgrades.
“Gary Sánchez is the only even starting-adjacent catcher on the free agent market, and I think Boston decided not to go down that route. I would still be considering it.”
Sanchez would be an intriguing pickup but a move should be considered unlikely at this point. Boston’s biggest roster needs are in the rotation and at second base. It sounds like the club isn’t planning on spending this offseason so anything it does spend likely will be geared to these two spots.
If things change, the two-time All-Star could be a solid option. He appeared in 72 games with the Padres last season and showed improved defense to go along with 19 home runs and 46 RBIs.
