The rugby league community is extending its support and well-wishes to Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson and his wife Sandra following a harrowing incident that led to their hospitalization earlier this week. The couple was airlifted to a hospital after a gas bottle explosion during a BBQ dinner at a property in the NSW Hunter Valley, owned by former Eastern Suburbs player and NSW Rugby League chief executive, John Quayle.
The incident occurred while the Robinsons were visiting Quayle’s property, a location where the two families, known for their close relationship, often gather. On Thursday night, it was revealed that the explosion happened when a gas smell was noticed about an hour after the BBQ meal. Trent Robinson checked the gas knob, which ignited, leading to the explosion.
Both Trent and Sandra Robinson suffered burns to their arms and were immediately treated with cold water and showers before the arrival of emergency services. Due to the secluded nature of the property, the couple was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital for further examination. While Sandra spent one night in the hospital, Trent remained for two nights to ensure there were no complications, particularly the risk of gas entering their lungs.
John Quayle, who was present during the incident, provided detailed insights into the events leading up to and following the explosion. He shared with the Sydney Morning Herald, “We were just having a barbecue, and about an hour after we’d eaten, a gas smell was there. Trent checked the knob, the knob ignited, and it went off. They are both OK. Naturally, triple-O was called, and they were very good. We’re in a pretty secluded area; the ambulances came straight away.”
Quayle further elaborated on the immediate response, “They were treated straight away with cold water and cold showers while the ambulance attendants treated them. To make sure everything was correct, a helicopter was summoned. They were taken to John Hunter Hospital for a precautionary examination. Sandra was kept overnight, Trent was kept for two nights. They are both home now, they are OK, and that’s the most important thing.”
The Robinsons have since returned home and are recovering from their injuries. The NRL community, along with fans and colleagues, have been quick to offer their support and express relief at the couple’s safe return. Trent Robinson, a highly respected figure in the rugby league world, has led the Sydney Roosters to multiple premiership victories, and his well-being is of great concern to many.
