Steve Kerr, the coach of the Golden State Warriors, would likely want to forget the 2023–24 NBA season. The club had a difficult season for the most part, and even though they made a late-season push, they ended up with a very unacceptable result: they lost handily in the play-in tournament’s opening round and were eliminated.
There were more than a few obstacles and hardships throughout it all. After committing several violent crimes, Draymond Green was given an NBA indefinite suspension and had to spend a month away from the team for counseling. For the second year in a row, Andrew Wiggins missed prolonged time due to a personal issue. There were rumors circulating that Jonathan Kuminga no longer trusted Kerr to properly develop him. The difficult-to-watch tribulations Klay Thompson went through cast doubt on the future of the franchise legend. Naturally, in January, cherished assistant coach Dejan Milojević passed away at the age of 46 after suffering a heart attack during a team dinner.
Kerr was entitled to be short, irrational, and cranky. And like all of us, I’m sure he was at times. However, the future Hall of Famer did a commendable job maintaining his manners and poise for the most part.
But don’t believe me when I say this. Kerr received the 2023–24 Rudy Tomjanovich Award on Tuesday from the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA), which bears the same name as the former Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets coach. The PBWA stated in a press release that the award “honors an NBA coach for his excellence on the court and his cooperation with the media and fans.”
