Baseball reporter Francys Romero reports that Denilson Aguila, a 17-year-old shortstop prospect from Cuba, has been officially signed by the Phillies.
In his two games with the South Florida Collegiate League’s Boca Raton Blazers, the gifted young switch hitter displayed some intriguing tools.
During his four at-bats, Aguila was walked three times and struck out the other. In addition, he demonstrated some defensive skill that fit his physical makeup nicely.
Additionally, he has a very fluid swing that has room for improvement.
Of course, it’s hard to put a lot of pressure on a 17-year-old who hasn’t played major league baseball or collegiate baseball in the United States, but it’s the scouts’ job to identify these players, whom other teams may have overlooked, and project what kind of professional they might be.
Aguila has the potential to be that player, and now that he’s signed with Philadelphia, he’ll have every tool at his disposal to try and develop into a Major Leaguer. The team has recently done a good job of developing players like Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm, Johan Rojas, Ranger Suarez, and Orion Kerkering.
The Phillies, who are ranked No. 23 on MLB.com, are searching for more talent in their pipeline. Aguila’s potential as a switch-hitting infield prospect makes acquiring him helpful for their reloading efforts.
It is premature to determine when Philadelphia might get a chance to see the gifted Cuban.
