Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand is entering the final season of his contract and hopes to sign an extension with the team.
“Obviously, I can’t believe how quick it came. It’ll definitely be a conversation at some point,” Marchand said on Sunday about beginning contract extension talks. “We’ll go from there. I’ve been here my whole career and would love to continue that when the time comes.”
During the 2023-24 regular season, Marchand scored 29 goals and recorded 38 assists in 82 games. In the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he added three goals and seven assists in 11 games, despite missing Games 4, 5, and 6 of the second-round series against the Florida Panthers due to an upper-body injury.
Marchand just completed the seventh season of his eight-year, $49 million contract ($6.175 million AAV) signed on Sept. 26, 2016. This contract has been a bargain for the Bruins, with Marchand scoring 248 goals and providing 392 assists in 652 games since its signing. He has surpassed the 30-goal mark four times in the last seven seasons, with his highest total of 39 goals in the 2016-17 season.
Turning 36 on May 11, Marchand was drafted in the third round (71st overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He now has 401 goals and 528 assists in 1029 NHL games. Marchand is close to surpassing Bruins legend Rick Middleton for fourth place in goals scored by a Bruin and trails his former linemate Patrice Bergeron (427) by 26 goals.
