What a Sunday-morning kind of guy. The Detroit Lions emerged victorious in a thrilling game to secure their first division title in thirty years. It’s clear that each member of the team is feeling something, albeit for different reasons.
In his post-game interview, Jared Goff was visibly upset because, despite being the person no one wanted, he had proven everyone else wrong. Dan Campbell, who adores these players, broke down in tears. One man in particular caught our attention the most: this guy.
No one has spent more time with this Lions team than Taylor Decker. He was projected to be the franchise tackle for the Lions when he was selected with the 16th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. That’s all he’s done since. He has also been here to bear the agony this squad endured.
This team was nearly destroyed by the tenure of Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn, starting with the sacking of Jim Caldwell in his second season. He never faltered. He never searched for a solution. Rather than accepting a free agent position, he chooses to accept an extension.
Decker returned enraged and demonstrated why it was foolish to entertain the idea of trading him when he was having injury issues and Lions supporters wanted him shipped. He was able to gather himself and resume playing well after dealing with his subpar play this season. He is not a player on this team who is going to give up.
Since joining this franchise, Decker has been a rock, and I don’t know of anyone more deserving of the opportunity to stand on that field and shed tears of joy than Decker. I’m interested to see where things go next. He’s a guy whose jersey number you retire when he chooses to give it up, in my opinion, though.
