Before Week 13, the Detroit Lions signed defensive tackle Bruce Irvin, who ended up having an immediate impact.
Irvin made his Lions debut by sacking Derek Carr of the New Orleans Saints and hitting him hard enough to take him out of the game. Head coach Dan Campbell seems to have been impressed by Irvin, as he has decided to give the pass rusher additional playing time for the remainder of the season. Campbell stated, as reported by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, “We would like to work him in more.”
Giving him some chances to assess where he is at, how he handled it, where his body is, and then possibly getting him some more is the strategy that was laid out last week. We are currently investigating that. However, I believe he has earned that.Irvin last played for the Seattle Seahawks the previous season, where he appeared in 11 games and recorded 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks before moving to Detroit. The 36-year-old was originally chosen by the Seahawks with the 15th overall choice of the 2012 NFL Draft.
He played NCAA football at West Virginia. He played his first four years of professional football in Seattle, where he was a part of the Seahawks’ 2013–14 Super Bowl victory. After that, Irvin joined the Oakland Raiders, where he played for two and a half seasons until being traded to the Atlanta Falcons in the middle of 2018.Irvin has since spent time with the Carolina Panthers, the Seahawks (where he played for three different teams), and the Lions. With the Raiders in 2016, Irvin had his greatest season yet, recording 57 tackles, seven sacks, and a league-high six forced fumbles.Detroit, which is 9-3 overall, will play the Chicago Bears on Sunday. In the NFC North division, the Lions presently have a comfortable three-game lead over the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.
