Head coach Dan Campbell continued to address the impact from the NFL’s latest blunder, a blown call in the Detroit Lions’ thrilling last-second defeat to the Dallas Cowboys, on Monday. In Saturday’s thrilling 20-19 defeat, Campbell and the Lions successfully converted the play that would have given them the lead, but a flag disallowed it.
Taylor Decker, the offensive tackle who made the game-winning catch, was declared an unauthorized receiver by the referees. The conversion ought to have counted, though, since video evidence indicates that Decker reported eligible to head referee Brad Allen. The Lions attempted to convert again but were unsuccessful.
In a Monday media appearance, Detroit Lions bench coach Dan Campbell stated, “I got controlled fury, and I’m ready to go,” in response to a question about his emotions following Saturday’s defeat. I’m more than prepared to leave. We have a mission to complete. We refuse to wallow in our own misery. We were supposed to make plays, but we never did. You need to make that one additional play that we missed in this close game against a strong opponent in a playoff-like atmosphere.
Campbell went on, “We’re going to use this as fuel.” Right now, I have pure octane. We’re going on because I woke up and am prepared.
Following their devastating and contentious loss on Saturday, the Lions are no longer eligible for the NFC’s top seed. Rather, Detroit will compete for the conference’s second or third seed. With a victory over the Minnesota Vikings, a Cowboys loss to the Washington Commanders, and an Eagles defeat to the New York Giants, Dan Campbell’s team can secure the second-best seed. The Lions will receive the third seed in any other scenario. In either case, Detroit will host a postseason game in the Wild Card Round; but, it is unlikely that they will avoid playing on the road.
