Having played 30 games, the Golden State Warriors have a 15-15 record and are now the 11th seed in the Western Conference after a poor start to the season.
They are a small-ish club with limited depth on the roster, and they are also playing without Draymond Green, who was given an extended suspension.
Meyers Leonard, a ten-year NBA veteran who is still a free agent and open to signing with any club in the league, is one player who I think could be able to help the Warriors.
Why?
Despite their struggles, the Warriors are still one of the NBA’s greatest teams, having advanced to the second round of the playoffs the previous season.
Steph Curry elevates any club, and Leonard has played for top teams, so any team that includes him will be considered a title candidate.
The former Illinois standout most recently played with the first-seeded Milwaukee Bucks of the Eastern Conference (last season).
In nine games (two starts), he shot 48.3% from the field and 38.9% from three-point range, averaging 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Leonard has also played with the Miami Heat (who advanced to the NBA Finals in 2020) and Portland Trail Blazers (who advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2019).
In 456 regular season games (he has also played in 30 NBA playoff games), he has averaged 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting 48.2% from the field and 39.0% from three-point range.
There would be little risk involved in signing Leonard at this stage of his career because he could sign a veteran’s minimum deal or a ten-day contract.
