Fighters Klay Thompson Announces The Franchise’s Young Star Future
The Warriors are obviously going through a transitional period even with potential Hall of Famers Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green among their ranks. The Warriors are once again expected to be eliminated early from the playoffs, should they even make it out of the play-in round, following their disappointing second-round playoff departure the previous year.
However, Thompson thinks the team’s future is well-managed. Following Saturday’s 128-121 victory over the Lakers, Thompson gave an explanation of why Jonathan Kuminga has the necessary skills to lead the team into the future.
Though the Warriors might not “go” as far as they really desire to this year, Kuminga’s postseason play may ultimately establish him as Curry’s replacement. Through 10 postseason games last year, the product of Congo averaged just 6.1 minutes per game and was hardly used in coach Steve Kerr’s rotation.
Kuminga continued to start the season from the bench this year, which didn’t start off well either. During the first three months of the season, the 21-year-old averaged 12.1 points, and there were rumors that Golden State might deal for him at the trade deadline following the revelation of his falling out with Kerr. But in the second half of the season, Kuminga has turned around his season and his future as a Warrior, averaging 19.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists since the All-Star break.
It’s commonly believed that postseason play is when athletes really show who they are. Kuminga must now vouch for Thompson’s remarks.
The Warriors, ranked tenth (35–31), will advance to the play-in round, where they may encounter the Kings, Lakers, or Mavericks. Their road to the postseason won’t be simple.
