How former 49ers QB Alex Smith came to appreciate Candlestick Park

Many San Francisco 49ers supporters hold a deep affection for Candlestick Park, despite the team relocating to Levi’s Stadium.

The stadium served as the Niners’ home from 1971 to 2013, though it declined in quality over time. Nonetheless, fans were drawn to its unique atmosphere, and former quarterback Alex Smith initially struggled to understand its appeal.

He later came to appreciate it, especially after a memorable playoff game against the New Orleans Saints in 2011. Despite the stadium’s flaws, it held a special place in Smith’s heart, particularly due to the advantage it gave the 49ers and the camaraderie it fostered among the team. Even in retirement, Smith fondly remembers the electric atmosphere of Candlestick Park whenever he drives by it with his kids.
