In an intriguing development, Bryce Harper’s current contract with the Philadelphia Phillies may be extended for eight more seasons, to 2031.
Prior to the 2019 MLB season, Harper inked a 13-year, $330 million contract, which seemed reasonable at the time. more so in light of the other contracts that were being awarded at the time. But the deal seems to be quite team friendly now that the seasons and MVP honors have passed.
Harper is happy about it and hasn’t voiced any complaints because it has allowed the team to make significant financial additions to the lineup. They will play in the World Series and the NLCS again in 2023 as a result of it.
However, a significant contract extension might be forthcoming, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Phillies are prepared to hear you out.
“Agent Scott Boras is seeking a contract extension for first baseman Bryce Harper, and even though his contract doesn’t expire until after the 2031 season, the Phillies are willing to talk,” says Nightengale.
Harper has expressed his desire to play well into his 40s, and the DH position can support him if his bat continues to be strong. Conversely, though, Harper is worth a lot more to the team and the community than just $26 million annually.
An extension may guarantee Harper stays in Philadelphia for the remainder of his career and is inducted into the Phillies Hall of Fame, giving him a little extra yearly income.
While that may not be the norm, you attempt to act honorably toward the face of your franchise when it comes to Bryce Harper.
