The White Sox are thought to be the front-runners to sign a few of the best international prospects when the signing window opens in January 2024, according to a recent report.
Francys Romero reports that the White Sox are the front-runners to sign Eduardo Herrera, a third baseman, and Jurdrick Profar, a shortstop who is the brother of Jurrikson Profar. He added that Profar is anticipated to sign for $700,000, while Herrera’s contract is anticipated to be in the $1.6–$2 million range. Fernando Cruz was also expected to sign with the Sox, according to his original report; however, he has since updated this to reflect Cruz’s expected signing with the Cubs.
As the 11th-best international prospect by MLB Pipeline, Herrera in particular would be a fantastic addition to this farm system; he would probably be the highest-rated player in this international signing class for the Sox. He started out as a shortstop but moved to third base as he grew, and right now he has the arm and athleticism to stay at the hot corner. Though he might eventually outgrow the position and move to first base, it’s possible. Scouts are most interested in his bat because out of all the top 50 international prospects on MLB Pipeline, he was the only one to receive a 60-grade power tool. Herrera’s 6’2 200+ lbs frame and power have led some to compare him to an adolescent Albert Pujols.
Even if Herrera commands the full $2 million reported by Francys Romero and Profar’s reported $700,000, the White Sox will still have over $3 million to spend on the remaining international prospects in this year’s class because they have a $5,925,000 bonus pool to work with. Which other prospects are currently being considered is unknown.
