A former pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies is opting to pursue his professional aspirations overseas, demonstrating the growing popularity of overseas baseball as a viable alternative.
After demonstrating their ability to pitch at a high level in the Korean Baseball Organization and Nippon Professional Baseball, young players have been able to return to Major League Baseball.
Former Phillies top prospect Connor Seabold has inked a contract with the Samsung Lions of the KBO, according to Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap New Agency.
According to Yoo, the $1 million portion of his contract is made up of a $100K signing bonus, a $100K incentive package, and a $800K salary.
In the third round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Philadelphia chose Seabold. In 2018, he was promoted to Double-A after making strong progress through the minor league tiers.
He broke into the Phillies’ Top-30 prospects list by 2019 and finished his Double-A career with a 3-1 record and 2.25 ERA in seven appearances. His season was shortened by an unrelated ailment.
In August 2020, Philly sent him and Nick Pivetta to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Heath Hembree, Brandon Workman, and cash.
He started five games in his Major League debut with the Red Sox in 2021. for them in 2022. Seabold was designated for assignment in January 2023 after going 0–4 with an 11.29 ERA.
Boston dealt him to the Colorado Rockies prior to the start of the previous season. Although he had more opportunities there, he struggled and finished with a 1-7 record and 7.52 ERA in 27 games, 13 starts.
After the season, Seabold was let go by the Rockies, and he has since made the decision to attempt reviving his career abroad in the KBO.
