It’s possible that the Toronto Blue Jays are attempting to exact revenge on the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Shohei Ohtani scandal. This week, MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson revealed that the Blue Jays are considering signing former Dodgers great J.D. Martinez as an experienced run producer. Martinez ought to be available for a two-year contract, according to Matheson.
Martinez, 36, was selected as an All-Star for the Dodgers in the previous season—his sixth such selection overall. Martinez was their primary designated hitter, hitting.271 with 33 home runs, 103 RBIs, and an OPS of.893. But Martinez needs a new team because Ohtani will be joining Los Angeles as the new designated hitter this offseason.
The Blue Jays, who require some power in the middle of their order, can benefit from that. Toronto’s free agents this summer include Whit Merrifield and Brandon Belt, but there are undoubtedly a few other big teams vying to sign Martinez as well.
