Finals week didn’t slow down BYU as the Cougars rolled over Bellarmine 101-59 Friday night in Provo. Six BYU players scored in double figures to lead another balanced effort.
Noah Waterman was the high man with 15, Spencer Johnson and Trevin Knell each scored 14, Atiki and Richie Saunders had 12, and Dawson Baker rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points. BYU has a team shot 58% from the floor and 16-39 (41%) from three. Spencer Johnson approached triple double territory with 8 rebounds and 7 assists to go along with his 14 points.
Leading scorer Jaxson Robinson was held out as a precaution for his ankle injury, although I expect him back for BYU’s next game. Dawson Baker played his second game of the season and showed the weapon he can be for BYU with his shooting ability to create off the dribble. His minutes should continue to increase as he fully recovers from a foot injury and integrates himself on the team.
Freshman Marcus Adams made his season debut when he checked in at around the 7-minute mark, shooting 1-6 and scoring two points. Marcus’ role will be interesting moving forward. He’s just starting to practice, but BYU is getting as healthy it has all season. Mark Pope will have to make decisions for his rotation as players continue to get fully healthy.
BYU moves to 11-1 on the season and closes non-conference play next Saturday versus old MWC foe Wyoming.
