The Buffalo Bills have a better chance than ever of making the postseason, and coincidentally, they recently achieved their most convincing victory of the year.
Stated otherwise, the arrow is strongly pointing upward. Things should get much better before the season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers and the New England Patriots, which are the two remaining games.
James Cook’s big reveal party in Week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys is a big part of the hype. Cook amassed over 220 total scrimmage yards and two touchdowns, tearing apart the Cowboys defense in the process. The second-year running back should continue to have a great career ahead of him as it was the icing on the cake after an excellent but underappreciated season.
Even better, when things are going well, Joe Brady, the offensive coordinator for the Bills, isn’t hesitant to feed him and the other running backs as much as possible. That presents a significant advantage for the Bills going into the months that will not only bring the worst weather of the season but also be the most crucial.
Josh Allen told reporters on Tuesday, “I think you talk about December and January football games, weather could be a part of that equation.” “To go out there and trust our offensive linemen up front to get the job done—and they did it so well this last game—and to trust the run game.” We faced an extremely strong inside line, you know. So, we have to give our troops credit for their hard effort, effective communication, and execution on the job.
“I don’t think many teams can just attack the run halfway through a game and shift their strategy like that. It was encouraging to see our guys doing that, and it was encouraging to watch Joe just keep calling it. And we will require it in the last stages.”
In two weeks, the Bills play the Patriots, so inclement weather is a possibility. These games are important because they are AFC contests, like the one versus the Chargers this week. The Bills can’t afford to lose either game, so who cares about the record?
The likelihood of an upset would be significantly reduced by the Bills’ potent and dependable rushing assault, and they would come closer to the postseason with each win. Even though they are ninth in the AFC right now, when you take into account the circumstances facing every team over the next three weeks, they have a 68% chance of making the postseason. The Bills will be among the top-7 seeds going into the regular season finale if they can win the next two games.
After that, it’s all about figuring out how to get to the Super Bowl—which is probably going to pass through Baltimore. The Bills will need to maintain their current level of success on the ground if they are to reach Vegas, as January in the Charm City isn’t exactly known for being sunny and pleasant.
And it’s not limited to Baltimore. Four of the AFC’s seven playoff teams currently play outside in inclement winter weather. In theory, it would be five of the seven when Buffalo is included if the Bills remove the Colts from the seventh spot and everything else remains unchanged.
It’s certain that the Bills will need to succeed in addition to relying heavily on their ground game, no matter where you look. The fact that they have the players and the coach to make it happen is the finest part.
