For the last two weeks of the season, the offensive line of the New York Giants will undergo a significant overhaul. Tommy DeVito, the team’s quarterback, will start from the bench going forward after starting the previous six games. New York will replace him with veteran Tyrod Taylor.
Considering that the Giants’ defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16 knocked them out of the playoff race, this is an intriguing choice. Taylor’s time with the team may be coming to an end in two weeks, and he will also be entering free agency in 2024.
On the other hand, head coach Brian Daboll has often said that he will start the players who offer him the best chance to win games. He and the coaching staff believe that Taylor will be that guy going ahead.
For DeVito, who has been having trouble the past two games, the writing was clearly on the wall. On Christmas Day, the Giants were behind 20-3 against the Eagles when he was benched at halftime. That made it six quarters in a row without a touchdown being scored by DeVito and the Giants offense.
When Taylor entered the game, New York fell 33–25 despite coming close to pulling off a comeback. DeVito, an undrafted rookie free agent, was sad to be benched, but he handled the situation like a multi-year veteran.
“I’m going to continue to be a good teammate,” DeVito said, via SNY. “[It’s] obviously a coach’s decision. I have no say or anything in that, but I’m going to continue to be a good teammate, go out and compete, and that’s it.”
On Wednesday, Daboll and the coaching staff informed DeVito of the modification. Despite the role shift, he won’t lose his cool and will be prepared in case his name is called again.
According to SNY, DeVito stated, “The same thing I’ve said since the beginning, stay even-keeled through it all, never too high, never too low.” “Because, as I already mentioned, everyone adores you when you’re up. When you’re depressed, everyone despises you. I’ll just maintain my composure throughout, which is why I’ll remain pleasant and calm throughout it all.
Given the circumstances, DeVito did had a respectable season despite a few setbacks. With three wins so far this season, he will at the very least tie for the team lead in victories.
He threw for 1,087 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 63.6 percent of his throws. But occasionally, particularly against superior defenders, his weaknesses were exposed as he missed reads that resulted in mediocre output.
However, DeVito performed quite well considering that he was an undrafted free agent and wasn’t anticipated to participate at all this season. DeVito gave the Giants an option for their quarterback depth chart past 2023, proving at the very least that he can start games and perform at a high level.
