On Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills traded their standout wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, to the Houston Texans, shocking the NFL.
Even though Diggs is a proven pass-catcher, he might not be the last to go to a different zip code given the trade of an All-Pro and multiple Pro Bowler.
Although there is a wealth of wide receiver talent available in this year’s NFL Draft, clubs who are not selected may choose to go the Texans’ way and use the trade market. In light of that, the following three wideouts might be traded before the 2024 season officially begins.
There is considerable cause for the persistent speculations of an Aiyuk trade, even in spite of General Manager John Lynch’s denials.
Aiyuk, who is on his last year of contract after the 49ers selected his fifth-year option, is hoping to be compensated. But San Francisco isn’t willing to pay the wideout’s price, and the two parties are “not close” to reaching an agreement on a contract extension, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Aiyuk and the Niners appear to have similar goals, but it will be difficult to achieve given that the team currently has three players earning more than $20 million combined and quarterback Brock Purdy’s contract is about to expire.
Higgins has a franchise tag with the Bengals that would pay him $21.8 million in 2024. Disappointed that the management has not offered him an extension, the fifth-year player has also asked to be traded.
Obviously, Higgins feels he’s earned stability in years and money after three seasons with 100 catches and two seasons with 1,000 yards. However, Cincinnati already has QB Joe Burrow under contract for a $275 million agreement that begins this season, so there might not be place for him.
After the 2024 campaign, Ja’Marr Chase, the top wideout, is also eligible for a sizable raise.
The Cowboys exercised Lamb’s fifth-year option, which was set to be $17.9 million this season, similar to the 49ers with Aiyuk. Beyond that, though, there are no promises for the former first-round selection—owner Jerry Jones made a recent suggestion to that effect.
Jones has publicly compared the worth of a Lamb deal to paying four or five players, suggesting that he is already crafting a story. As for Arlington, he hinted at a future without him when he said, “Whoever has CeeDee,” in reference to those negotiating contracts.
