The Dallas Cowboys (7-9) had no playoff stakes to play for in their regular season finale against the Washington Commanders (11-5) on Sunday. With key players like CeeDee Lamb missing, the Cowboys opted to start Trey Lance at quarterback.
One of the few bright spots for Dallas, All-Pro kicker Brandon Aubrey, had an unusual mistake early in the second quarter, involving one of the Cowboys’ cheerleaders.
After a penalty on Washington, which followed a successful Dallas field goal, Aubrey was set to kick off from the 50-yard line. Unfortunately, he mishit the kick, sending the ball out of bounds and inadvertently striking a cheerleader in the back of the head near the 10-yard line. Commanders punter Tress Way, who was nearby, quickly went over to check on her.
Soon after, the Fox broadcast camera captured the cheerleader, who was visibly upset at first, but then smiling and laughing through tears as she stood on the sideline. There were no immediate updates on her condition or any potential injuries.
The NFL on Fox’s social media account shared a video of the moment, with the caption, “Shoutout to this #DallasCowboys Cheerleader for taking the hit like a champ.”
According to the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ website, the cheerleader in question is Michelle, a rookie from San Diego, California. A similar incident occurred just a few days earlier, during the Ohio State vs. Tennessee first-round college football playoff game. On ESPN’s “College GameDay” pregame show, a cheerleader from the Ohio State squad was struck by a wildly off-target kick from a fan during Pat McAfee’s field goal contest.
