The Buffalo Bills are placing a significant bet on free agent acquisition Curtis Samuel to mitigate the impact of losing Stefon Diggs in a trade with the Houston Texans.
However, not everyone is convinced that the veteran wide receiver will elevate Josh Allen and the passing game in 2024.
Buffalo inked Samuel to a three-year, $24 million deal on March 15, but one NFL analyst is skeptical about his potential impact. Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler includes Samuel among the 14 “worst” free agent signings this offseason.
Fowler questions the Bills’ strategy, especially after losing Gabe Davis and Stefon Diggs. He suggests that adding another perimeter wideout like Tee Higgins would have made more sense for Buffalo.
Samuel arrives in Buffalo after a season in Washington where he caught 62 passes for 613 yards and four touchdowns. While Samuel hasn’t reached 1,000 receiving yards in a season yet and averages about three touchdown receptions per year, there’s optimism due to his pairing with Josh Allen, the most consistent quarterback he’s played with.
As of now, Samuel would likely lead the Bills’ receiving corps alongside Khalil Shakir and Mack Hollins. With an extra draft pick from the Diggs trade, Buffalo could target top receiver prospects in the upcoming draft to further bolster their offense.
