Defenseman Derek Forbort has been placed on long-term injury reserve by the Boston Bruins, and rookie defenseman Mason Lohrei has been recalled from the Providence Bruins.
The deal was announced by the team right before the Bruins’ Thursday night game against the Buffalo Sabres at TD Garden, where they were skating in the morning at Warrior Arena. After the morning skate, Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery was supposed to speak with the media. It is unclear how, when, or what kind of injury Forbort sustained.
Derek Forbort has four assists in 20 games this season despite being more appreciated for his defensive abilities than his scoring ability.
Just before the Boston Bruins’ 7-4 loss to the New York Rangers on November 25, defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was activated off long-term injury reserve, and Lohrei was sent to Providence (AHL). Lohrei has received a call from the NHL twice now. On November 1, he was activated following the four-game suspension of Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy and the placement of Grzelcyk on long-term injury reserve. The 22-year-old rookie rearguard had three assists and one goal in his first ten NHL games.
Mason Lohrei was informed by the Bruins coaching staff that his return to the AHL was determined more by the salary cap and a numbers game than by performance. Days before Lohrei was sent back down, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery addressed the media and said the following about the player:
Montgomery informed reporters, “We’ve been communicating, showing Mason video after every game.” “Joe Sacco and the assistant coaches have done an excellent job of pointing out his strengths and areas for improvement in his game. Those are directing rushes and firmly grabbing pucks. Puck fights. robs time and space, in our defense.
He’s a really good hockey player for his age. We are ecstatic to have him. Young gamers go through growing pains. When Bergeron was eighteen, there most likely was. Well, most likely not.
