Kevin Walters, the coach of the Broncos, chokes back tears as he talks about how he and his kids handled his wife’s cancer death: “On Christmas Day, We Took Her To The Hospital.”
Before deciding to pursue a career in coaching, Walters played 242 games for Brisbane and won four premierships. He most recently made an appearance on an edition of Fox League’s Face to Face. The 56-year-old talked about growing up, playing rugby league, and his first wife Kim’s tragic death in 1998 in a lengthy interview with Yvonne Sampson.
Kevin’s first three children were raised by Kim Walters, who passed away following a two-year fight with breast cancer.

“It was an awful period in our lives,” Walters remarked.
Since my family and I have experienced that, I suppose there are many more who can relate.I was quite appreciative of my brothers’ support, especially my parents, who moved into the house when Kim became a truly bad person. For me and my children, they acted as a fortress of strength.I suppose all I wanted was to be the greatest version of myself for Kim and my children. I just wanted to go on, ignore what was truly going on, try my best to make Kim’s final moments on earth as comfortable as possible, and get on with my life.
We hauled her up to the hospital on Christmas Day, and she never returned home. It was rather typical.
Walters is determined to make Christmas Day a joyous occasion and continues to remember Kim’s memory every year.
