Wayne Bennett and South Sydney reach a $3 million, three-year agreement.
Wayne Bennett met with representatives from South Sydney in Brisbane on Monday and came to an agreement on a $3 million, three-year contract. Although the agreement has not yet been inked, Rabbitohs representatives traveled to Queensland on Monday to finalize the details.
Bennett is scheduled to meet with South Sydney powerbrokers this weekend at Magic Round, where it is anticipated he will sign a deal that will see him return to Sydney for the upcoming season. This masthead was informed by sources with knowledge of the situation but not authorized to discuss it publicly that performance bonuses are part of the agreement and are based on South Sydney’s on-field performance.
Given Bennett’s history of last-minute changes—most notably, his infamous rejection of verbal commitments to join the Sydney Roosters and his second spell at the St George Illawarra—rabbittohs officials are hesitant to celebrate the deal. Leading the negotiations, South Sydney executives met with Bennett earlier this week, including Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly.
Russell Crowe, a co-owner, had been in communication with Bennett throughout the process but was not present for the meeting. South Sydney did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday morning.
