Bears trade Justin Fields to the Steelers
The much-maligned quarterback Justin Fields has been acquired by the Pittsburgh Steelers from the Chicago Bears, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears will get a sixth-round pick in 2025 that might move up to a fourth round pick depending on playing time.
It’s another risky move at quarterback for the Steelers, indicating general manager Omar Khan’s shift in thinking. Following two seasons in which they placed all of their eggs in the Kenny Pickett basket, Pittsburgh has acquired Wilson and Fields by trading the previous first-round pick.
In the meantime, the Steelers spent just $1.2 million and a day-three draft pick to completely revamp their quarterback room.
However, Fields’ addition is not intended to undermine Wilson. Fields will support Wilson as the starting quarterback for the Steelers, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
With the trade on Saturday, Fields’ brief but turbulent time in Chicago comes to a close. After being selected with the 11th overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Fields struggled to establish himself.
Fields did exhibit signs of becoming into a superior dual-threat signal caller. He became the first quarterback in history to throw for three or more touchdowns and rush for 140 yards or more in a single game in 2022, setting the record for most yards gained by a quarterback in a single game (178 yards).
But such moments of genius never resulted in victories. His 10-28 record over three seasons as the starter would have been considerably worse if he hadn’t won four of his final six games with Chicago.
