First-round ECF game won by the Celtics over the Pacers in overtime
22 May (UPI) — Before Jayson Tatum scored 10 of his 36 points within the final five minutes to lift the Boston Celtics past the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals opening game, Jaylen Brown forced overtime with a crucial 3-pointer.
The Celtics won 133–128 at TD Garden on Tuesday by forcing 21 turnovers and capitalizing on the turnovers with 32 points. Tatum finished with 12 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 assists. Brown and guard Jrue Holiday each contributed 26 points and 28 points. There were ten lead changes in the game. Holiday told reporters, “We always knew that there’s always a chance.” We’ve frequently witnessed bizarre events. We don’t necessarily believe we’ve lost the game until it’s over, in my opinion. We were able to remain resilient towards the finish of the game in part because of this.
As previously said, anything can occur. It might be a totally different game with a few turnovers, a fantastic shot, and a terrific look by [Brown], or on the other end, we miss a few other wide-open shots. Thus, [we] are the kind of team that will never give up, no matter how long it takes or what it takes.”
The Celtics were outshot 53.5% to 47.5% by the Pacers. They had a 30–13 advantage in bench points as well. Star guard Tyrese Haliburton logged 25 points, 10 assists, three rebounds and three steals in the loss. For the Pacers, forward Pascal Siakam and center Myles Turner scored twenty-four and twenty-three points, respectively.
